Loneliness is an important social issue. For many, loneliness leads to a loss of self- esteem and can, sadly, lead to depression and other serious health issues. Social inclusion is the best solution for loneliness.
In the U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May has recently appointed a Minister for Loneliness to address this problem. Studies show that Boroondara has approximately 10,000 people, who are lonely and isolated from their community.
For some people loneliness is an understandable personal choice, for others there are health and mobility limitations requiring clinical assistance. There is a third group that we aim to help. These are people who find themselves isolated by circumstances, rather than by choice. These circumstances and many and varied, affecting all ages and backgrounds.
Examples of this are:
-
Loss of a partner
-
Change of job
-
Loss of employment
-
Cultural difference
-
Language differences
-
New arrivals
-
Arrival of a new baby
-
Etc.
For these people there is a solution to being lonely.
The Shire of Boroondara is rich with opportunities for people to meet, make new friends, learn a new skill or become involved in our community. Connecting people with these opportunities is the key objective of OWL.
Introducing OWL (On with Life)
The OWL Program provides a current and updated list of activities, where interested people can get involved, either as a participant or a volunteer. Through an activity listing, and links to our partner websites, we present a comprehensive range of interesting events and involvements to suit people’s interests and relevant skills. We believe that this could be life changing for many lonely people looking for fulfillment and a sense of purpose.
OWL is free and the website does not require any registration. Simply click on the link to gets started (www.onwithlife.org.au)
